Before I go to bed, I have to point you all toward one of the best fan fiction "series" out there: The Very Secret Diaries by Cassandra Claire.

A word of advice... their effect is cumulative. The more you read, the more jokes you get.

Have fun.

You do know that the author is a plagiarist "borrowed heavily" from previously published works in some of her fan fiction? (Not the diaries, I understand, though they're heavily based on Bridget Jones Diary apparently.) The entire thing is chronicled here, and in more condensed fashion here. Now that she's published herself, I wonder what her thoughts are on "creative inspiration" which involves copying entire blocks of text.

True.

This does not negate the fact that the VSDs are as funny as HELL.

I find her antics (and the flap around them) funny as well. The fact remains that the VSD are not exactly the best example of fan fiction to hold up to people who might not be familiar with it, because of all of the drama associated with the author.

Eh, I'm not scolding, really. I don't care what people think (or don't think) of Ms. Claire and her works. I was just pointing out -- in case [livejournal.com profile] crowdog66 didn't know -- that there are issues attached to this that she may not wish to promote.

Indeed, I did not know about the plagiarism flap. Most interesting.

I'll be leaving this post up, but I doubt I'll be recommending Claire's works again anytime soon. Thanks for the info.

You're welcome. I know you're not having an easy time of it of late, and thought that a potential wankfest or flame war in your journal wouldn't help matters.

I had wondered this about a certain earlier post, where you publicly skewered a certain Internet Loony Extraordinaire. When I saw your post wasn't screened I was wondering why you wished to engage her attention, given her known history for vanity googling and hounding anyone who said anything about her at all -- not just negative! Then I realized that you *didn't* know, and the response was unwelcome, and felt badly for not having warned you. Hence the preemptive sheep dog impersonation on this one. While it's not necessarily llama fodder, it might well have attracted something unwelcome. *wuff, wuff* ;)
