I'm back home, after a rather interesting evening.
Fortunately the allergic reaction never went beyond the rash stage with a bit of nausea thrown in. No itching (thank the Gods), and no respiratory effects. But George and I sat in the urgent care ward for about three hours waiting for them to proclaim me (a) free of any kidney infection according to their urine test, and (b) safe to go home with the multiple little red spots that are clustered all over my body.
By the time we left the hospital I was exhausted and ravenous, and George (who'd sprung out of bed when I woke him up at 6 pm stating that I was turning red) was simply ravenous. I'd had a hospital vending machine sandwich while we were in the waiting room (gick!), but I was almost an hour overdue to eat by the time we sat down to a meal at Papa George's in Osborne Village (right next to the Shoppers Drug Mart where we picked up the 50 mg antihistamine tablets that will hopefully get the rash under control by tomorrow).
George had fish and chips; I had the "chicken fiesta", which is a chicken breast on top of a slice of smoked ham on top of garlic bread, smothered in mushroom sauce. Then home by cab, and now that I've got an antihistamine in me I'm just hoping that I can stay awake long enough to have a hot bath before it overcomes me with sleepiness.
Thank the Gods it wasn't worse. Sulfa drug reactions can be quite severe and involve not only the skin but the lungs, the kidneys, and the nervous system. If all I came away with are some clusters of red dots I count myself truly fortunate.
I'm sorry if I worried anyone unduly. Tomorrow I'm probably going to be totally brain dead because I have to take two more rounds of antihistamine and according to everything I've been told these little tablets knock you right out of the ballpark. On Monday I have to call my GP and schedule an appointment to get another prescription. I'm truly hoping that I don't end up feeling even more like shit than I currently do as a result of stopping the antibiotic treatment of whatever infection is currently in play.
Thanks to everyone for their kind wishes and support.
